The 0-0 draw between Manchester United and Liverpool may not look like much on paper, but we’ve missed the team’s toughness and unity this season.
The draw was Manchester United’s first in the Premier League this season. They are now in seventh place with 28 points after 17 games.
Erik ten Hag will be happy with how his team played defense, but it was clear that United was having trouble in the closing third. Since they’ve only scored 18 goals so far this season, the manager might want to add more attackers in January.
The newest player to join Manchester United is Lois Openda.
TEAMtalk says that Ten Hag wants to sign Lois Openda, a Belgian striker that he allegedly really likes.
RB Leipzig has a £70 million release option on the forward that comes into play in the summer of 2025. Openda only moved to Germany in the summer.
The Bundesliga team wants to keep their star player, so a move this winter is not likely to happen. However, a move in the summer is possible.
The way Lois Openda plays
Openda has made a big difference for Leipzig since moving there from Lens. They did very well right away in the Bundesliga and the Champions League. This is clear from the fact that he has scored 15 goals and set up 4 others in just 24 games across all categories.
To put the ball in the back of the net, the 23-year-old is a great scorer who moves well and stays calm. Openda is also good with his left foot, even though his right foot is stronger. This makes him much less predictable in the box and one-on-one situations. Seb Stafford-Bloor, a football writer for Athletic Europe, says the Belgian’s speed is “terrifying.” This season, he has reached a top speed of 35.71 km/h in the Champions League, which is faster than Erling Haaland’s 34.6 km/h.
But how does Openda compare to Rasmus Hojlund, United’s present striker, who has had a terrible season in the Premier League and hasn’t scored in 13 games?
You can see that Openda and Hojlund don’t play in the buildup very often. Instead, they play on the edges of the game. However, the Leipzig forward is much more dangerous in the box and can easily finish off chances, while the 20-year-old has missed his XG in the league by 3.01.
Also, the player who used to play for Vitesse has been reliable in front of goal over the last two years, scoring at least 18 goals in each of those two years, and he looks like he will keep that up this season.
Based on the numbers and level of play, Openda would help the Red Devils and maybe even Hojlund by giving the young Dane less work to do. Still, a striker can only do his job if he is given the ball, and the former Atalanta player has been living off of scraps for most of this season.
So, even though the Belgian player would make United a better team, other spots and problems may need to be fixed first.
