Man Utd legend Solskjaer revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo asked to ‘take a break’ but then asked to start when he had to sit on the bench

Despite requesting not to play, OLE GUNNAR SOLSKJAER has disclosed that Cristiano Ronaldo resigned from Manchester United when he was benched.

After Solskjaer finished second the previous year, United recruited the superstar in 2021 to increase their chances of winning the Premier League.

Ronaldo arrived in the same summer as Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane, and he immediately made an impact.

In his second game against West Ham and his second debut against Newcastle, he scored twice.

The Portuguese player then made his third straight start against Aston Villa, exactly as he had asked.

The Norwegian said that even after Ronaldo was benched by Solskjaer at his request, he continued to toss his toys from the pram.

Speaking on the Sky Bet-sponsored Stick to Football podcast, Solskjaer stated: “Getting that passion from Cristiano Ronaldo was part of the signing process, but that did have its complications.”

“You believe Cristiano would benefit them? You have guys like Anthony Martial, Mason Greenwood, and Marcus Rashford who can learn from the best, most disciplined player in the world.

He told me to start him for three straight games once he got to the club, and then put me on the bench for the fourth, but because he is so ardent, he didn’t like it when I did that.

Despite a difficult beginning, Solskjaer acknowledged that during his second spell at Old Trafford, he did not frequently clash with Ronaldo.

Ronaldo was substituted multiple times and stormed off the pitch, but Solskjaer thinks he handled himself well even in those moments of disappointment.

The Manchester United manager continued, “I don’t recall Cristiano Ronaldo having too many issues during my tenure there.

“He walked off the pitch as soon as I brought him on as a replacement during the Everton game, but there were additional issues with him after I left the team.

“I had a great relationship with Cristiano, and we have a great deal of mutual respect.” When I was there, I believe he handled his frustrations rather well.
