The loss comes after Erik ten Hag’s side were beaten 2-0 by Tottenham at the weekend.

He will be hoping his players bounce back at home to Nottingham Forest at Old Trafford on Saturday.

It is understood that Evans and five other members of the first-team started the defeat to newly-promoted Burnley.

Hannibal Mejbri, Scott McTominay, Facundo Pellistri, Anthony Martial and Donny van de Beek are all said to have started.

United fans have been left concerned by the result, with one tweeting: “It’s over, end the season now.”

Another added: “We are finished.”

A third supporter also commented: “It’s gonna be a long season man.”

This is another position where Vincent Kompany has plenty of options to choose from, with each player as strong as the other.

Premier League winner Evans returned to the Red Devils on a short-term contract this summer.

After traveling with the team on their preseason tour of the United States, it is believed he is close to reaching an agreement on a lengthier contract with the club.

But because he hasn’t yet registered for the current campaign, he isn’t in their first two matchday lineups.

Both the young players Hannibal and Pellistri, the latter of whom is close to joining Sheffield United, are anticipated to be sent away this summer.

Prior to the transfer window closing, United is still open to bids for McTominay and Martial.

West Ham had shown interest in McTominay, but their deal was turned down as part of a double swoop featuring Harry Maguire.

Van de Beek, a Dutch midfielder, has been listed for sale by United and may potentially depart.

After recovering from a catastrophic knee injury, the 26-year-old has not been named on the bench for either of their league games this season.
