After Harry Maguire hobbled off the field in the loss to Bayern Munich, Manchester United suffered yet another injury setback.
The defender hurt himself in the first half of United’s 1-0 loss at Old Trafford and had to leave the game.
Before trying to continue, Maguire received treatment on the pitch.
But his problem was too great, and Erik ten Hag had to make a quick adjustment.
As Jonny Evans replaced the England international, the audience rose to its feet in applause.
An online commenter reacted by asking, “Is it true that Varane is starting again and Maguire is hurt?” Tell us who cursed us!
Also, someone else mentioned that Maguire is hurt now. There is an actual curse upon this club.
Lisandro Martinez, a defender, is one of seven United players already out with injuries.
The commentators had noticed a possible hamstring issue in Luke Shaw throughout the first half, so he was also substituted out at halftime.
Shaw has been out for three months with an injury this season and has only just returned to the lineup.
Considering Maguire’s recent surge for the Red Devils, this injury is a disappointment.
Ever since his comeback in October, he has been one of United’s few bright spots.
After recording three shutouts in three wins in November, his efforts were rewarded last week when he was awarded Premier League player of the month.
Unwantedly, United’s chances of advancing to the Champions League quarterfinals were dashed when Maguire suffered an injury.
In order to advance from their group, Ten Hag’s squad had to defeat Bayern and cross their fingers that Copenhagen and Galatasaray would play to a draw.
But they were booted out of Europe after losing 1-0 and Copenhagen winning by the same score.
