Andre Onana, the starting goalkeeper for Manchester United, could miss up to six games because he will be competing in the African Cup of Nations in January and February.
The 2022 World Cup marked the star player from Cameroon’s first appearance for his country. Due to disagreements with manager Rigobert Song, he was eliminated from the group after just one game.
Onana declared his retirement from international competition in late December, but it seems possible that he will reconsider before the pivotal AFCON qualifier against Burundi the following month.
Foot Azimuts claims that Onana would rejoin the national squad in September as a result of negotiations with the Cameroonian government.
He will be listed in the future squad, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
United could be without Onana for key games in January & February
In their AFCON qualification group, Cameroon and Burundi are level on four points. On September 12, they will host the East African country, and a draw would be enough for them to go to the tournament. If Onana participates and aids them in qualifying, it will have an immediate effect on the Red Devils. The 2023 AFCON is slated to take place in Ivory Coast from January 13 to February 11.During this time, United will play four Premier League games against Aston Villa, Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Tottenham Hotspur. If Cameroon makes it to the final, Onana might be out for all four games. If United advance in both tournaments, the former Inter player might also be forced to miss the second leg of the Carabao Cup semifinal on January 22 and the FA Cup fourth-round match on January 27.In our opinion, Onana’s absence in goal for United might be significant. Altay Bayindir is on the verge of joining the team, and he might have a hard time filling Onana’s spot.
