Manchester United has gained a crown they don’t want. 

After what they’ve done this season, Erik ten Hag’s team has the weakest defense of any English team in the history of the Champions League. 

His team gave up 15 goals and only got four points, which was not good enough to make it out of the group rounds. 

With a 1-0 win on Tuesday night, Bayern Munich ended the Theatre of Dreams’ chances of going to Europe for another year.

This was only the second time in United’s history that they came last in a European group. What an exciting, heart-pounding six games they’ve been! Everything was still up for grabs on the last day. 

The Red Devils scored 12 goals, which puts them among the top scorers in the competition. However, their defense was weak and they made a lot of mistakes that cost them the game. 

In the first week, United lost 4–3 at Bayern Munich in a crazy game that will be known for a mistake by Andre Onana and a Casemiro double that not many people saw. 

Okay, you say. There’s no shame in losing to the Bundesliga winners for the 11th year in a row. 

The next game, though, was a shocking 3-2 loss at home to Galatasaray. Onana made another mistake, Casemiro was sent off, and the home team lost a lead before Mauro Icardi scored the game-winning goal late on. 

United kept their European hopes alive with a tough 1-0 win over Copenhagen in their next game. Harry Maguire scored the only goal, and Onana made a heroic last-second penalty save. 

But that would be their only clean sheet. 

In the fourth week of games, Manchester United lost badly on the road to Copenhagen, who came back to win 4–3. Marcus Rashford was given the boot. 

United lost a lead again, this time to the Danish winners, who scored late goals from Lukas Lerager and the ironically named Roony Bardghji. 

United was desperate to win their next-to-last game, which took place in Turkey and was a 3-3 draw with Galatasaray. It was one of the most exciting games of the season. 

Onana made two more saves that night, which made people seriously wonder whether he should be the club’s first-choice goalkeeper. 

It was the last straw on Tuesday night when United lost 1-0 to Bayern Munich at Old Trafford. They didn’t have much to offer against a safe team.
