The French newspaper L’Equipe gave Mason Greenwood the worst possible grade of 1/10 for his play for Marseille in their 3-0 loss to Paris Saint-Germain at home on Sunday.
The striker who used to play for Manchester United was in great shape going into the game. He had scored six goals in his first seven games for Marseille after moving there from Old Trafford in the summer.
But he was taken off at halftime against PSG because he had played so badly in the first 45 minutes.
All three goals were scored in the first half. Greenwood provided a bad pass right before Bradley Barcola scored, which was his direct responsibility for the third goal.
People also said that Greenwood wasn’t trying hard enough before Joao Neves scored the first goal.
The match report from L’Equipe was very harsh on Greenwood. It said, “[Manager Roberto] De Zerbi waited until halftime to take him off, and even that was too late, as his contribution touched on disrespect.”
“He doesn’t seem interested in anything else when he doesn’t have the ball in his hands.” Both the jog he took before the first goal and the bad pass he made before the third goal were complete disasters.
After Sunday’s game, De Zerbi also said bad things about Greenwood.
“Because I didn’t like the way he played,” the former Brighton manager said when asked why he took him off.
“We have to push in every game if we want to be in the running for the title.”
“I believe he was having a bad day.” He scored a lot of goals and got us a lot of points, but at OM, you have to push in every game if you want to be in the running for the title.
“You can’t say you played well if you scored two goals one game and then played badly the next.” It’s not possible. Even though he’s a good player, I thought he would do better tonight. But not just from him. In general, I always expect more.
Greenwood left United for Marseille in July and paid Β£30 million to move there.
Since January 2022, he hadn’t played for the Premier League team. During that month, he was arrested on charges of attempted rape, violence, and forcing behavior.
Following the “withdrawal of key witnesses and new material coming to light,” all charges against Greenwood were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service in February 2023.
Others in the Marseille fan base were strongly against his signing, even though the case against him was dropped. When he was first linked to the club, some fans started the #GreenwoodNotWelcome campaign.
Benoit Payan, the mayor of Marseille, was also against the move.
