Lionel Messi has been named for Major League Soccer’s Most Valuable Player award, even though he has only played in FOUR games.
Messi didn’t come to the US until July when he joined Inter Miami. He won the World Cup that year.
Soon after joining the team, Messi used his magic to help Inter win their first trophy, the Leagues Cup. He scored ten goals and set up one more.
But those were not MLS regular season games.
This 36-year-old player has played in four regular season games for David Beckham’s team.
He has scored once and set up two other goals in those games.
Messi has been considered for the League’s MVP award, which is named after USMNT legend Landon Donovan, even though these numbers aren’t very good and the sample size is small.
Fans couldn’t believe what they heard, with one saying, “What kind of joke “
“Stupid,” said the second person. “Whoever put his name on that list.”
Someone else joked, “While we’re at it, we might as well put him forward for an Emmy, Golden Globe, Oscar, and Grammy.”
“There is a better case for giving Taylor Swift NFL MVP than for giving Messi MLS MVP on a team that will miss the playoffs,” said someone else.
The bad start to the season by Inter means they won’t make it to the post-season play-offs, even though Messi joined the team late.
In the play-off final from last year, Gareth Bale scored in extra time to help Los Angeles FC beat Philadelphia Union on penalties.
MLS teams can only choose two players to receive the award.
The polls will open on October 10 and close at the end of the MLS regular season on October 23.
There are three vote factors, and each one is worth one-third of the total weight:
MLS players right now
MLS managers, coaches, and technical leaders
Choose journalists from both local and national news outlets who covered the 2023 MLS regular season on a daily basis.
Besides that, Messi was also up for Newcomer of the Year.
The legendary Barcelona player is said to want to play for his old team, Newell’s Old Boys, again when his present contract ends in 2025.
