As a second-half substitute, Jayden Danns netted two goals to help Liverpool defeat Southampton 3-0 in the FA Cup, securing a quarterfinal matchup with Manchester United.
Danns, who is eighteen years old, was one of six youths from Liverpool who saw action at Anfield on Wednesday.
Lewis Koumas, age 18, Bobby Clark, age 19, James McConnell, age 19, Trey Nyoni, age 16, and Kaide Gordon, age 19, were the others.
Just before halftime, Koumas scored from 19 yards to make his senior debut and put Jurgen Klopp’s young Reds ahead.
Danns, the son of former Birmingham and Blackburn player Neil Danns, made it 2-0 in the 73rd minute with a sly chip over Saints custodian Joe Lumley.
Fifteen minutes later, he sealed the victory by converting a rebound after Lumley had stopped Conor Bradley’s initial attempt.
Danns had only made three appearances as a senior in his career.
He made his Premier League debut last week against Luton, coming on as an 89th-minute substitute. On Sunday, he made another appearance in the EFL Cup final, winning 1-0 over Chelsea.
The FA Cup quarterfinals draw was held just before the start of Wednesday’s game.
Liverpool was aware that a victory over Southampton would force them to travel to either Manchester United or Nottingham Forest in the round of eight.
Thanks to a goal from Casemiro in the 89th minute, United defeated Forest 1-0.
The quarterfinals will happen over the course of the March 16–17 weekend.
