United lost their sixth Premier League match to high-flying Newcastle United.
Erik ten Hag made some surprising starting 11 selections. Three full-backs, including Luke Shaw and Harry Maguire, made up the back four.
Even though Antony had his finest game of the season, Rashford replaced him on the right.
The Red Devils were lucky to be 0-0 at halftime.
The Magpies increased pressure on the visitors after halftime, and Anthony Gordon scored the winner.
United struggled to score and were overwhelmed by the hosts.
Player Ratings
Andre Onana: 4/10
Onana appeared insecure despite making no major mistakes. He was badly outmatched for Kieran Trippier’s free-kick and stayed put throughout corners.
Aaron Wan-Bissaka: 4/10
Alexander Isak almost had an assist from the 26-year-old early on. Sleeping during Gordon’s strike was his fault.
Harry Maguire: 6/10
To prevent Isak from scoring, Maguire made important blocks. He was United’s greatest player despite his sloppy passing.
Luke Shaw: 5/10
Newcastle’s opening came via Shaw’s sloppy backpass. Along with Maguire, he constructed critical blocks.
Diogo Dalot: 3/10
The Portugal international began at left-back. He was taken off guard for the goal and not supportive thereafter.
Kobbie Mainoo: 5/10
He was pinned back to defend the box that night. He regularly had to cover for Newcastle’s wingers, who readily opened up full-backs.
Scott McTominay: 3/10
The whole game, McTominay was a passenger. He was always second-best to Joelinton in midfield.
Bruno Fernandes: 5/10
Fernandes gave Alejandro Garnacho a tremendous chance. The Portuguese midfielder struggled with the ball as the Red Devils defended all night.
His failure to rally his people in a tough climate would cast doubt on his leadership.
Alejandro Garnacho: 4/10
Argentine had an opportunity to put Man United up early but fired poorly.
Anthony Martial: 2/10
The Frenchman started ahead of Hojlund and failed to prove Ten Hag right. His lack of commitment allowed Newcastle’s defenders to go by him.
The manager should have substituted Martial at halftime since he was so bad.
Marcus Rashford: 1/10
It was his lowest season performance. He repeatedly lost Tino Livramento, putting Wan-Bissaka in a two-on-one scenario. When he tried to follow Livramento, the full-back taught him.
Substitutes
Rasmus Hojlund: 4/10
He was better than Martial but had little chance to shine as Man United battled to maintain the ball.
Anthony: 5/10
After replacing Rashford, the Brazilian balanced the right wing.
Sofyan Amrabat: 5/10
Late in the game, he looked good versus Isak.
