Regarding Andre Onana’s performance in Sunday’s Premier League matchup between Manchester United and Manchester City at the Etihad, Manchester United supporters have voiced their opinions.
After joining Manchester United in a £47.2 million transfer from Inter Milan last summer, Andre Onana has come under fire in his first season.
The 27-year-old United player has a difficult task ahead of him as the Red Devils’ custodian after club veteran David de Gea left Old Trafford at the conclusion of the previous campaign.
Even so, Onana’s shortcomings and inconsistency have caused United boss Erik ten Hag to continue to have faith in the Cameroonian this season.
Onana has been reliable as United’s top player in the Premier League despite making mistakes in the Champions League and enduring criticism from the team.
The Cameroon international is still very much in the running for the Premier League Golden Glove, which was taken home by David de Gea, a former United player, last year.
Man Utd star Onana vs Man City
Erik ten Hag complimented Manchester United player Andre Onana for his recent success at the Premier League club in remarks made prior to the Manchester City game.
In the Red Devils’ 1-0 victory over Nottingham Forest in the FA Cup fifth round at City Ground, Onana put on a strong showing.
Ten Hag stated, “I think he’s doing very well,” according to the official Manchester United website.
“Based on my evaluation of his season thus far, it appears that he has well adjusted to the Premier League and has demonstrated strong performances there.
What you’re seeing is that he’s making improvement, and he seems to be performing really well lately. He must thus view this as a starting point and advance from there.
In the first half of United’s home opener versus City at the Etihad, Onana made an impression. Marcus Rashford gave his team the lead after ten minutes.
Before starting the Red Devils’ counterattack with a long ball down the pitch, the former Ajax and Inter Milan player caught a cross.
Marcus Rashford scored the first goal of the game with a thunderbolt strike that went past Ederson from 25 yards out after Bruno Fernandes held up the ball and delivered it back to him.
In addition to helping United score their first goal, Onana’s command of his box during the game and his self-assurance when facing City also won over Red Devils supporters.
Man Utd fans react to Onana’s performance
On social media site X, which was originally known as Twitter, United supporters were quick to commend Onana’s performance in the Manchester derby.
Red Devils supporters applauded his performance against City, with one United supporter saying he looked a lot like the player he was at Inter Milan the previous campaign.
“Onana’s pass. Bruno’s sprint and hold-up play. The way Rashford finished. One fan commented, “Everything was inch perfect.”
“Andre Onana’s passing in the Manchester derby had been sensational,” said an additional person.
A third person said, “To be fair to Onana, it appears that he is developing into a United ‘keeper.'”
“This is the Onana I saw in the UCL [Champions League] final last season,” another commenter said.
“Onana just turned into prime David de Gea today,” penned a fifth.
“Onana [has] been brilliant so far today – he’s quite clearly capable, it’s just about cutting out the brainless errors [and] being consistent,” wrote a sixth comment.
“Even if he had tried 3,000 times, De Gea could never have made the pass Onana made before Rashford’s goal,” one X user remarked.
“Onana must be wearing his Inter shirt underneath that United one today, he’s on it,” exclaimed a different person.
