Erik ten Hag gave an emotional interview right after Manchester United’s defeat to Bayern Munich.

Manager Erik ten Hag made a special effort to place blame following Andre Onana’s error in Manchester United’s 4-3 Champions League defeat to Bayern Munich. Marcus Rashford and Christian Eriksen, according to Ten Hag, might have done more to stop Leroy Sane’s original shot. The Red Devils’ goalkeeper requested a post-game interview to talk about the mistake.

United were well in the game by the time Sane’s tame effort from just outside the box inexplicably found its way past Onana and into the bottom corner. The Cameroonian has made a shaky start to life in red, and he took the blame squarely on his own shoulders in a specially-requested post-match interview.

“It’s good that he’s doing that but it’s about the team,” a worked-up Ten Hag told TNT Sports. “Mistakes are being made but you have to bounce back as a team.

“We have to believe as a team that we can always bounce back. We showed that tonight, even after the mistakes we made.”

Regarding Onana’s mistake specifically, Ten Hag said: “It’s not only about one mistake because before that, it was too easy for the player to take the shot.” The comment won’t make pleasant reading for Rashford or Eriksen.

Sane easily maneuvered around Rashford from Bayern’s right flank, and the winger let the former Manchester City player enter on his left foot of choice. Eriksen attempted to block the shot with a halfhearted leg dangle, but Onana’s error and the deft one-two with Harry Kane were unavoidably successful.

“When you score three goals at Bayern, you have to take a point,” Ten Hag continued. “We are in a period where a lot is going against us, but we have to make our own luck. We’ve also played great teams in our last three games.

“Every game is important to win. It’s huge. We have to make our own luck, nobody is going to help us. It’s in our hands, nobody else’s.”

Onana opted to face the music head on after the final whistle, admitting in a brutally honest interview that the start of his spell with the Red Devils has not gone to plan.

United legend Paul Scholes is confident that the former Inter Milan stopper has the strength of character to put the blunder behind him.

“He’s brilliant with his feet but he makes mistakes and he has to get over it,” the 48-year-old told TNT Sports.

“You can’t afford to dwell on it, he’ll maybe think about it for 24 hours but when you start training, it’s gone. The spotlight is going to be on him, but he’s been at big clubs before.”
