Just prior to United’s announcement of Leny Yoro’s arrival from Lille for £52 million, the 22-year-old arrived in France last night and has since signed a contract that will extend until 2029. The potential value of the transaction is in excess of £30 million.

The Ligue 1 powers Marseille will pay an initial £27m for the one-cap England forward, in addition to £3.2m in add-ons.

United has also incorporated a 50% sell-on clause into the bundle deal.

The Red Devils have now announced that his departure has been finalized in a concise statement posted on their website.

The statement stated that “Mason Greenwood has officially transferred from Manchester United to the French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent basis.”

“The 22-year-old English forward, who spent the previous season on loan at Getafe in Spain, has made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since his debut in 2019.”

“We extend our best wishes to Mason for his future endeavors.”

Greenwood, who Marseille disclosed will don No.10 in his official unveiling video, enrolled in United’s development academy in Halifax, West Yorkshire, at the age of six.

He advanced through the ranks and made his senior début in 2019, subsequently becoming a regular member of the first team.

But Greenwood was kicked out of the club in January 2022, and nine months later he was charged with attempted rape, attack, and controlling and coercive behavior toward a woman.

He denied the charges, and in the end, all criminal charges were dropped in February 2023.

Greenwood was moved to the Spanish club Getafe last season, where he showed off his amazing skills and won the Player of the Year award.

Many organizations across Europe wanted to hire him after seeing his shows.

This month, Greenwood was told by the club’s leadership team that he would not be playing for Manchester United anymore. After that, he practiced on his own during the pre-season.

Marseille quickly followed through on their agreement, even though many fans were against it and started a movement called #GreenwoodNotWelcome.

Additionally, Benoit Payan, the mayor of Marseille, has openly spoken out against the plan and said that he will try to convince Pablo Longoria, the president of the club, to cancel it.

But De Zerbi, who had moved from Brighton, said he would “protect Greenwood” as soon as he got there.

“There is not much to say about Greenwood because he has not been recruited yet,” De Zerbi said before.

“He plays well enough to play for his country and is a champion.”

“I am not paying attention to personal things; I do not know what happened.”

“I treat a player like a child when he signs with the club.”

“I will defend him in public even if it means taking off his ear behind his back.” Like my children, my players are like my children.

Between now and then, Greenwood will not have to wait a long time to go back to England, where he was born.

Greenwood, who was born in Bradford, could play for Marseille in a friendly against Sunderland on August 3 at Valley Parade, which is home to League Two team Bradford City.
