France defeated The Netherlands handily to guarantee their place in Euro 2024 in Germany the following summer. For Real Madrid, it was especially welcome news since Aurelién Tchouameni, one of their own, gave one of the best performances of the evening in a 2-1 victory over a team managed by former Barcelona manager Ronald Koeman in Amsterdam.

One of the first names on Didier Deschamps’ team sheet, Tchouameni began the game in the holding role of the midfield three. He started 19 of those games and contributed to the 20th consecutive game for France. The last time Tchouameni was benched by the French coach was in March 2022, which is actually the only occasion since his debut in 2021 that he has been used as a replacement.

Tchouameni demonstrated this performance to prove why. He continued to disrupt the Dutch attacking game in the midst of the park, putting on an all-action show that saw him record the most tackles and wins in duels. Atalanta’s Marten de Roon was substituted at halftime by Koeman, who changed things up due to the team’s troubles in the middle, where Tchouameni excelled.

Tchouameni, who made four interceptions, recovered possession nine times, and was booked for his lone foul late in injury time, helped France win after Quilindschy Hartman’s goal narrowly reduced the lead created by Kylian Mbappe’s double.

Following his long-range goal against Ireland during the previous international break, he appeared to be confident and made an offensive contribution as well. Three shots were taken by Tchouameni; two were taken from beyond the penalty area, and two of them were on target and one was blocked.

For the first time since the World Cup semifinal matchup with Morocco, Didier Deschamps decided not to utilize the 20-year-old midfield player, thus Eduardo Camavinga could only watch from the bench of replacements.

Despite having played in all five of France’s prior Euro 2024 qualifiers and starting three of them, he was defeated in Amsterdam by Deschamps’ tactical choices.
