After blaming Manchester United’s goalkeeper for Senegal’s opening goal in their 3-1 AFCON victory, supporters made fun of Andre Onana.
Ismaila Sarr scored a goal with a well-timed punch, leaving Onana glued to the place and earning the moniker “born to concede goals.”
Andre Onana was hardly able to move when Ismaila Sarr’s shot went past him.
Onana’s delayed response to Sadio Mane’s shot
More criticism was directed at Onana following his alleged error during Cameroon’s loss against Senegal during the AFCON in Ivory Coast.
Despite his remarkable attempts to go above and beyond for club and country, not much has gone right recently for the under-fire Old Trafford No. 1.
After playing in United’s 2-2 home draw with Tottenham on Sunday, Onana, 27, hurried to the airport.
He did not see Cameroon’s Africa Cup of Nations opening, a 1-1 draw with Guinea, on Monday, though, when inclement weather delayed his private flight.
And on Friday night, things got worse for United’s summer addition.
He could only jab the ball away after just 16 minutes against Senegal, which allowed Sarr to turn and shoot home through a packed penalty box.
In the fourth minute of stoppage time, Sadio Mane sealed the win for the reigning champions with a first-time finish that slid into the net rather than blasting past Onana, who was unable to get a hand on it despite the shot’s lack of strength.
Even though Onana’s vision of the shot was partially obscured, a supporter commented, “This is the epitome of an addiction to giving up goals.”
“Onana has just let a goal in…some things never change,” another person remarked.
Critics referred to the stopper as a “mannequin” and questioned why his feet seemed stuck when Sarr turned to shoot.
Some remarks that were similar were, “Does Onana dive for anything?” and “It’s not like Onana to stay put.
Many United supporters also question the worth of his £47 million summer transfer, given that the Red Devils are currently seventh in the Premier League after giving up 29 goals in 21 games.
“I had enough of Onana in the last ten games, to be honest, we made a mistake of a signing,” one person declared.
However, the former Inter Milan hero has his fans as well. One of them says, “It’s the defenders’ fault, not his.”
After Cameroon’s two AFCON group games ended with a single point, a supporter made the following joke: “Onana will catch a quick flight back to England.”
Habib Diallo extended Senegal’s advantage in minute 71 after Marseille’s Sarr placed a precise cross.
After Cameroonia’s Jean-Charles Castelletto headed them back into the game, they squandered two simple opportunities to equalize the score.
Nevertheless, Idrissa Gueye broke loose to put up Sadio Mane, the former Liverpool striker, for Senegal’s game-winning goal in stoppage time.
