The veteran striker was anonymous for most of the match, but his ex-Manchester United teammate helped the Seleccao win.
Portugal had to work hard to beat Iceland 2-0 on Sunday in an attack-versus-defense matchup.
After Bernardo Silva’s wonderful flick, Bruno Fernandes sent a shot into the bottom corner from the top of the box to break Iceland’s resistance.
After a Joao Felix attempt was fumbled, Ricardo Horta scored the second from the bench, pretty much ending the game. Cristiano Ronaldo’s first shot hit the goalkeeper, and Horta scored the second rebound.
Iceland rallied late and hit the crossbar, but the hosts won comfortably. Portugal will be among the favorites at the Euro 2024 tournament in Germany next summer after finishing their Euro 2024 qualifying campaign with ten wins from ten.
Goalie, defense
Diogo Costa (6/10):
Had little to do all night until Iceland hit the bar in injury time.
Joao Mario (6/10):
He often drove forward and enjoyed the ball. Not able to impact the game in the final third, but a good showing. Replaced Guerreiro.
Ruben Dias (6/10):
A simple night. Dias is outstanding, thus Iceland couldn’t pass him.
Goncalo Inacio (6/10):
Headed wide from six yards out in the first half, but his defense was solid.
Joao Cancelo (7/10):
Some great dribbles down the left wing, then the right. A fantastic act with great crosses.
Midfield
Otavio (6/10):
A mishit cross hit the post early. Dribbled nicely but didn’t effect the play enough.
6/10 Joao Palhinha:
A calm midfielder who cleans up when needed. Not his worst night.
Bruno Fernandes (8/10):
Hit a spectacular shot from the penalty area into the bottom corner. He made some great passes while running the show.
Attack
Bernardo Silva (7/10):
Was always available for a pass and assisted Fernandes’ opener with an impudent backheel. He finds space well, and Iceland struggled to pick him up before his 62-minute substitute.
Ronaldo (4/10):
Led a great 30-minute chance over. After Felix’s shot was saved and dropped to him, Horta tapped in after his rebound was saved. Mainly anonymous.
Joao Felix (7/10):
Smart footballer who found space in tight left wing zones. He couldn’t score but did everything else.
Subs, Manager
Ricardo Horta (7/10):
Soon after replacing Silva, he scored during a goalmouth scramble.
Guerreiro (6/10):
Replacement for Joao Mario in the final stages, deflected Iceland shot onto crossbar.
N/A: Bruma
In late.
Not available: Joao Neves
Late substitute.
Roberto Martinez (7/10):
Belgium’s manager seems at ease. He will be optimistic in Germany next summer after a spotless qualification record.
