With a 3-2 win over Barcelona, Real Madrid moved 11 points ahead of Barcelona in La Liga. Jude Bellingham scored the game-winning goal.
The English midfielder will soon be named La Liga winner in just his first season with the club.
There are still six games to go, and Real Madrid can even take it easy in La Liga so they can focus on their Champions League semi-final against Bayern Munich, which stars Harry Kane.
He said before the game, “We’ve baked the cake; now we just need to put the cherry on top.” That’s what Bellingham did with his 21st goal in all events in extra time.
After Lucas Vazquez tied the game at 2-2 in the second half, it looked like it would end in a draw. Both teams looked tired from their Champions League games the week before.
The legs don’t know when to stop running, though, because the Bellingham motor doesn’t have an off switch. He had the last word.
The England player scored 17 goals in his first 20 games, which was a crazy start to the season. He had only scored twice since the beginning of the year, but he came to win this second Clasico of the season, just like he did the first, with two goals at Montjuic.
He smiled after the game, “The best part was the last part.” The winning goal was scored by Bellingham. This has been a week we will never forget.
When Andreas Christensen headed in Raphinha’s corner after only six minutes, Barcelona got off to a great start. Toni Kroos freed up the former Chelsea center-back at the back post, and he headed the ball past Andriy Lunin.
Real Madrid tied the game when Pau Cubarsi fouled Lucas Vazquez. Vinicius converted the penalty, breaking Marc Andre ter Stegen’s 600-minute streak of not giving up a league goal.
Lucas skipped past Joao Cancelo and then got a foul from Cubarsi, a 17-year-old defender who was playing in his first Clasico.
When Lamine Yamal flicked Raphinha’s corner kick into the goal, Barcelona thought they were back in front. Even though the 16-year-old boy cheered, the goal was not given because La Liga does not have goal-line technology.
When Fermin Lopez scored off the bench in the second half, Barcelona went ahead again. But they were only ahead for five minutes before Lucas scored from Vinicius’ cross, putting Barcelona back in the game. They had to win to have any chance of extending the title race into the final weeks of the season.
But Bellingham kept pushing Real Madrid forward, and after Lucas’ cross went past Joselu in the six-yard box, he scored the game-winner into the roof of the net.
There were 91 minutes left in the game, which meant that Barcelona had no more chances to win or save their season. Madrid will win the league, it’s just a matter of when.
