After a tough night at the Santiago Bernabeu, the midfielder scored in injury time to give Carlo Ancelotti’s team a 1-0 victory.
For Real Madrid against Union Berlin on Tuesday, Joselu’s missed opportunities total may have reached double digits, but Jude Bellingham saved the striker with yet another goal to launch the Blancos’ Champions League campaign in typically spectacular way. A painful draw appeared to be in store for Carlo Ancelotti’s team, but Bellingham’s goal in the 94th minute delivered them a well-earned victory.
Union, who made their Champions League debuts in the first half, successfully protected Madrid. Nevertheless, Joselu missed the most straightforward chance to score as he rose to meet Lucas Vazquez’s cross at the far post. Bellingham also had a chance to connect with Luka Modric’s cut-back but stumbled before doing so.
In the second half, the home team made a stronger effort, with Rodrygo hitting the post with a soaring volley and Joselu having a close-range shot deflected over the bar. By the end, the 33-year-old was experiencing poor luck as a number of opportunities either went unseized or slipped through the net. Others, like Antonio Rudiger, who missed from five yards out, were also at fault.
Still, Madrid stayed in the contest, and Bellingham latched onto a ricocheted effort from Federico Valverde, turning home with the goal gaping. Another dramatic conclusion for a squad that is dependent on them in Europe. The Santiago Bernabeu players of Real Madrid are rated by GOAL…
Goalkeeper & Defence
(6/10) Kepa Arrizabalaga
Did not have any obligations. He shouldn’t have to against this team, in my opinion.
(7/10) Lucas Vazquez
given a unique start. provided a lot of forward movement in the first half and ought to have been credited with a goal.
(7/10) Antonio Rudiger
Early on, when the Union threatened, they were a little shaky at the back. Eventually settled, and probably ought to have scored.
Nacho (6/10):
Worked while wearing the armband. After 70 minutes, correctly removed.
David Alaba (7 out of 10)
Offered cover at left-back before appearing much more at ease there. a pillar of this group.
Midfield
6.5/10 for Aurelien Tchouameni
Despite receiving a stupid yellow card, he maintained his composure at the middle of the field. The ball may have been moved more quickly, though.
8/10 for Luka Modric
At age 38, I still enjoy controlling the middle. On dark nights in Europe, he comes alive.
6.6/10 for Eduardo Camavinga
The diamond that is most likely to be ineffective. won the ball back, but unable to match Bellingham’s and Modric’s tempo.
(9.5/10) Jude Bellingham
a persistent threat at Madrid’s midfield’s outside edge. came close a number of times before burying the eventual victor.
Attack
Rodrygo (7/10):
Was relatively quiet before coming alive in the second half. Unlucky not to score.
Joselu (5/10):
Missed one good chance and one half chance in the opening period. Continued to fail to hit the target after the break. Ended the night with 11 attempts and no goals. Unlucky or ineffective? Perhaps both.
Subs & Manager
8/10 for Federico Valverde
After getting going, a terrific performance. Direct, strong, and astute in his movement. Bellingham won because to his shot.
(7) Toni Kroos:
up the pace for the home team.
(6) Fran Garcia
an increase in speed to the left. There were a few times when Madrid was exposed due to his defensive flaws.
(N/A) Brahim Diaz
Too little time to have an effect.
7/10 for Carlo Ancelotti
heavy rotation before the Madrid derby. Vazquez and Nacho received starts, and Modric entered the game as well. Before his star man came to his rescue, it appeared to be one of those days.
