The Blancos’ undefeated start to the season came to an end, and the former Bayern Munich center-back appeared lost.
forth a dismal 3-1 loss to Atletico Madrid on Sunday, Real Madrid put forth a terrible defensive performance and lacked offensive flair. David Alaba, a regular fixture for Los Blancos, was responsible for three very similar headers against their cross-city rivals that cost them their first La Liga points of the year. Los Blancos were vulnerable on the counter-attack.
Within four minutes, Alvaro Morata scored, tipping Samuel Lino’s angled shot past a motionless Kepa Arrizabalaga. Soon after, Antoine Griezmann connected with Saul to score the second goal for the home team with a header into the bottom corner. The France star missed an opportunity to add a third, though.
Real’s comeback came from Toni Kroos, who switched from using his left to right foot before slamming past Jan Oblak from the edge of the box. However, Madrid’s defense once again failed them, as Atletico Madrid doubled their advantage in just two minutes of the second half. Morata then added a third free header to give him a hat trick.
Shortly after, Carlo Ancelotti made a move, bringing in new players, and switching back to his favorite 4-4-2 formation to get back into the game. As a result, the visitors produced more as Joselu caused issues in the box, Rodrygo and Aurelien Tchouameni shot just wide, and Joselu struck narrowly wide.
However, the decisive goal never materialized, and Atleti appeared content to defeat their fierce rivals.
