Video allegedly shows Manchester City player Rodri yelling at Real Madrid star Vinicius Jr. after they defeated him to win the Ballon d’Or.
When Rodri was proclaimed the winner of the prized award on Monday night in Paris, the Spain star received football’s highest individual honor. In addition to helping City win the league for the fourth consecutive year, the midfielder was recognized for his contributions to Spain’s winning squad in the European Championship.
Real Madrid and its star Vinicius Jr. chose to miss the event after the Brazilian was excluded, which created a stir that night.
On social media, Man City shared a video of Rodri joyfully celebrating his victory in a restaurant.
Footage reportedly showed Rodri chanting about Vincius Jr during his Ballon d’Or celebrations
Rodri made history as the first defensive midfielder to ever win the Ballon d’Or on Monday
When Vinicius Jr. failed to win the prize, Real Madrid responded angrily.
While singing “Rodri’s on fire!” and tossing their napkins into the air, Rodri and teammate Ruben Dias were seated in a restaurant.
Spanish publication El Chiringuito has already released more video of the festivities inside the eatery.
Rodri can be heard singing Bella Ciao in the video, but it seems that the Man City star has altered the song’s lyrics to “Ciao Vini,” which translates to “Bye Vini.”
The cry can be seen as a reaction to Real Madrid’s indignation over Rodri’s selection as the award winner.
Rodri is the first defensive midfielder to win a Ballon d’Or. He has been described as a “humble and kind” figure.
Despite being heavily favored to win the coveted award, Vinicius Jr. was unable to do so, and Jude Bellingham, a teammate from Real Madrid, finished third.
When it was announced that players and coaches had chosen to skip the event after finding out Vinicius Jr. would not be receiving the top honor, the Spanish powerhouses made headlines.
The European champions had originally intended to send a 50-person delegation to Paris, but they decided against it after it became certain Rodri would win.
Following his confirmation as the runner-up, the 24-year-old posted on social media, writing on X: “I will do it ten times if I have to.” They’re not prepared.
Man City had shared footage of Rodri celebrating his success at the same restaurant
On Monday, Rodri sat next to Man City teammate Ruben Dias as he accepted the honor.
Reuters reports that this remark alluded to his recent battle against prejudice.
The snub was described as “historic robbery” by Real Madrid sources to ESPN Brazil.
Additionally, Marca stated that “the Ballon d’Or no longer exists for us,” according to irate Madrid sources.
“If the award criteria do not indicate Vinicius as the winner, then Carvajal should be the winner,” Madrid said AFP in a statement.
Given that this was not the case, it is evident that Real Madrid is not respected by Ballon d’Or-UEFA. Furthermore, Real Madrid avoids situations in which it is not recognized.
