Ruben Amori said that Marcus Rashford had to want to get better.
He really wanted it this past Sunday, and he got it with two goals and a performance that showed the new manager is quickly getting Rashford back to his old self.
Amorim even scored two goals from Joshua Zirkzee, and we were starting to wonder if he would ever get another chance.
The Red Devils played very well, even though it was just Everton.
Football fans at Old Trafford don’t get to enjoy easy wins very often in the league.
In Amorim’s first three games, they won two and tied one.
United fans are happier now that they have a new manager.
But let’s go back to Rashford. He scored two goals in a game for the first time in 22 months in a 3-0 home win over Leicester City.
He was having a great time at the time and was on track to scoring 30 goals in a season, which would be the best number of goals he had ever scored in a season.
Emorim wants that Rashford back, and United needs that Rashford.
Following his goal in last week’s 1-1 draw at Ipswich, this was great play from the 27-year-old.
It looked like the weight of the world had been lifted off his shoulders as he ran across the Old Trafford field with the ease and speed that are his trademarks.
To be fair, the other team did a little something to help United here.
Branthwaite really wanted to help United this season, and it looked like he got what he wanted.
The center back for Everton put a ball past his own goalie and then helped set up the home team’s second goal as the struggling Toffees lost their way.
As expected, Branthwaite had hoped to be wearing the Red of United in this game since the big spenders came to Goodison Park last summer.
United looked elsewhere, Everton held out for £70 million, and they offered £45 million plus add-ons.
He had a bad afternoon here.
Bruno Fernandes played a corner kick to the edge of the area for Rashford, who wasn’t being watched. It was the 34th minute.
Jordan Pickford seemed to be able to block his shot to the bottom left corner.
After that, Branthwaite put out a foot and pushed it away.
In just seven minutes, United fans were getting ready to carry Branthwaite off the field by the shoulders.
Pickford moved out of his area with the ball and passed it to Abdoulaye Doucoure. This made it look like Everton wasn’t in any trouble.
As Doucoure gave it back to Branthwaite, there was still no danger. But as he hesitated, the alarm went off, and Amad took the item from him and fed Bruno Fernandes.
This was a great chance for everyone, even United. The leader set up Zirkzee for his second goal for the club.
Even though Everton came into the game at the bottom of the table and had only lost one of their last eight league games, United was the more positive team from the start.
Five of those games, though, were draws, and they hadn’t scored in the three before this one. It was a mistake to think that moving Beto up front and Dominic Calvert-Lewin to the bench would change that.
When Dwight McNeil set Beto up, it was Everton’s only chance of the first half. Beto went around the goalie but hit the side netting from an angle.
The scores were tied at that point, but United always looked like they had the best chance to break the tie.
United had the most dangerous players on the field in Amad and Rashford. Together, they scored two goals right away in the second half to put the game out of Everton’s reach.
But Sean Dyche’s team never looked like they were close to winning from the start.
As soon as John Brooks blew the whistle to start the second half, Everton passed the ball back for Pickford to run up the field.
United would clear their lines, and Zirkzee would send Amad off with a great turn and lay off.
Rashford sped past two Everton players and across his teammate to get a perfectly weighted pass and score.
The fourth goal came in the 64th minute, and Amad’s exceptional resolve once again paid off.
He ran through James Tarkowski to get the ball, then passed it to Zirkzee, who shot it back across Pickford and into the bottom right corner.
United hadn’t won a league game by four goals since the first day of the 2021–22 season, when they beat Leeds 5–1.
