As Antony’s terrible Old Trafford career continues to flame out, Manchester United will consider bids for the Brazil winger this summer.
Antony became the second most expensive signing in the history of the club when he left Ajax eighteen months ago, with United unlikely to even be able to recover half of that amount.
However, the fact that United is willing to give up and sell the 24-year-old speaks much about their dissatisfaction with his performance.
Antony has only started one of the previous eight games—the FA Cup match against Newport County—and was once again picked as a substitute in United’s Saturday afternoon loss to Fulham at Old Trafford.
Manager Erik ten Hag substituted three players, including another young winger, Amad Diallo, after selecting teenager Omari Forson ahead of him, then turned to Antony in the last minute of injury time.
After 20 Premier League games this season, Antony still hasn’t given his club a goal or an assist.
His numbers are depressing, as new co-owners Ineos are closely examining the cost and performance of the United team in the wake of Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s £1.3 billion investment.
In the summer of 2022, Ten Hag returned to his former team, Ajax, to sign Antony. It is understood that the Dutchman is still hopeful about Antony and believes he can salvage his English career.
However, Ten Hag acknowledged last month that Antony had been sidetracked by claims of domestic abuse, which he vehemently disputes. As a result, Brazil dropped Antony in September, and he had to return to South America for a while in order to clear his record.
Following United’s loss to Fulham, the manager gave a direct reason for starting Alejandro Garnacho, Forson, and Diallo before his costly Brazilian disaster.
Ten Hag stated, “It had nothing to do with fitness.” “We have a lot of options on the right, but he’s fit.”
We’ve all witnessed Antony’s form, so he needs to improve. I observe it in practice, but Omari Forson, Amad Diallo, and Garnacho also merit playing time.
