‘SOFT AND WEAK’ – Not Onana, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand slamed 4 Man Utd stars after ‘school-boy’ performance vs Galatasaray

After Manchester United’s disastrous loss to Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday night, Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand were incensed. The Red Devils were humiliated by their Turkish opponents at home, and Mauro Icardi scored in extra time to win the game 3-2 after missing a penalty attempt minutes earlier.

After Rasmus Hojlund had given United the lead with his first goal at Old Trafford after 17 minutes, Wilfried Zaha had equalized the score against his old team. Hojlund scored again shortly after the hour mark by scuttling into the opposite end from the halfway point and smashing home from close range.

Due to Kerem Akturkoglu, the visitors were able to tie after Andre Onana’s glaring error. Icardi then failed to convert the subsequent penalty. The former Inter Milan striker made up for his earlier mistake with nine minutes left by skimming the ball into the corner when the hosts lost concentration.

When the game ended, Scholes and Ferdinand, who were serving as TNT Sports pundits at Old Trafford, felt embarrassed. As all three players failed to stop Akturkoglu from scoring Galatasaray’s second goal of the evening, the former singled out Sofyan Amrabat, Raphael Varane, and Victor Lindelof for more criticism.

Paul Scholes and Rio Ferdinand were both furious with United’s performance against Galatasaray

“Amrabat not in his favoured position but he just gets spun, the lad turns him around,” reflected Scholes.

And Red Devils legend Scholes blasted centre-backs Lindelof and Varane for “looking sluggish” throughout the game.

The pair were at fault for several of Gala’s goals thanks to their bad positioning and lack of speed.

And speaking after the final whistle, Scholes questioned whether either man has what it takes to form part of United’s future backline.

He told TNT Sport: “I worry about Varane a bit, he has been one of the very best defenders around, in that same ilk at Real Madrid.

“I don’t know where the hell Varane is going, Lindelof just looks lost in the middle, and they were so open in the middle of that defensive area.”

“I just think his legs are looking sluggish, he can’t keep fit and I worry about him.

“I’m really disappointed, I don’t think United played that badly. All the talk before was they couldn’t score goals.

“It’s almost as if we disregarded the defensive side of the game, it wasn’t good enough, they were wide open at times.

“Lindelof and Varane were so soft and weak and we all know what the goalkeeper did.”

Scholes went on to question Marcus Rashford’s ability to make the right attacking decisions, with the England ace choosing to square the ball to Bruno Fernandes rather than shooting at one stage when he was clean through on goal.

In the position facing goalkeeper Muslera, Rashford decided not to finish. Instead, Rashford passed the ball across to Bruno Fernandes. However, the pass lacked power and the opponent’s defender promptly blocked it.

“I think the Marcus Rashford of last season scores here, there’s no doubt about it because he had confidence then,” added Scholes.

“It’s a good pass from [Christian] Eriksen, who had a good second half, but I saw Marcus coming in and he’s always thinking about Fernandes but the trouble is he’s not actually thinking about how quick the right-back is behind him.”

Ferdinand, meanwhile, slammed United’s defenders for switching off immediately after the Red Devils had taken the lead on not one, but two occasions. He said: “As a kid, you’re told that you’re the most vulnerable after just scoring and that happened twice tonight, we fell asleep.

“At times, it looked far too easy and they went through us like a hot knife through butter and it’s embarrassing. This is the Champions League, it’s not school football or anything. The lack of positional awareness, spacial awareness. At this level you’ll be punished for that and they were tonight.”
