The FIFA Men’s Player of the Year award was given out on Monday night in London, along with a host of other honors. The winners were not very surprising, with Lionel Messi taking home yet another individual honor.
Still, the evening produced some fascinating revelations. As is well known, players, managers, and journalists vote to choose the FIFA Player of the Year. More precisely, the international manager, captain, and one designated journalist from each nation.
This indicates that a few Liverpool players participated in the voting, notably Dominik Szoboszlai, who made an unexpected decision.
Dominik Szoboszlai Erling Haaland’s selection
According to the Hungarian publication M4 Sport, Dominik Szoboszlai, a 23-year-old midfielder for Liverpool, chose Haaland as his Play of the Year. Lionel Messi was ranked second in his poll.
In the meantime, Messi received the most vote from Virgil van Dijk, who cast his ballot in the opposite direction because he is the captain of the Netherlands national team.
It is not shocking that Szoboszlai made his decision. The Hungarian had expressed his desire for Haaland to get the honor earlier this week.
His connection with the forward for Manchester City is well known and dates back to their time as housemates in Salzburg. They currently reside in a gated community in the North of England, close to one another as well.
But in the end, Messi was the one who won the trophy once more.
