Virgil van Dijk, the leader of the Netherlands, has said what referee Felix Zwayer did right after the game ended.
Once again, Gareth Southgate’s team left it too late on Wednesday night. Ollie Watkins’ goal in the 90th minute secured England’s spot in the Euro 2024 final against Spain on Sunday night.
The Three Lions were down 1-0 after only seven minutes thanks to a great goal by Xavi Simons, but they tied the game with a penalty kick after a controversial call.
In the end, England won 2-1 and moved on to the Euro finals for the second year in a row.
Van Dijk, the sad captain of the Netherlands, talked about the referee after the game was over. “The referee ran back inside right after the FT whistle, that says a lot,” he said.
The Dutch were angry that he didn’t give them a corner when the ball hit John Stones last and felt like it should have.
He also said, “I have no words.” It’s terrible to give up so late. It hurts so much. I don’t know what to say because I have to stand here. It hurts so much.
Pierre van Hooijdonk, a former Dutch football player, said on NOS, “Felix Zwayer, put him on the black list.” In the end, the penalty in the first half and many things that happened in the second half chose the winner.
An ex-striker named Alan Shearer said on BBC Radio 5 Live after England’s win, “Yes, Gareth Southgate has been criticised at times.” But I thought the first half tonight was great; it was more like what we wanted. He deserves all the praise.
Another player who used to play for Manchester City, Izzy Christiansen, said, “Gareth Southgate seemed to have a deep strength.” The crowd saw him pass out, and I was able to read his lips. He said “one more” to them, and they replied.
“At that moment, he seemed to say a lot.”
