A successful day of competition for the home team players during practice before major tournaments! 

Luka Modric scored a penalty to assist Croatia in defeating Portugal 2-1, while Spain comfortably defeated Northern Ireland in the lead-up to the European Championship on Saturday.

Spain and Croatia’s final friendly matches preceded their opening match of the tournament on June 15 in Berlin. They are a part of a challenging Group B that includes Albania and Italy.

Spain refined its offensive strategy by defeating Northern Ireland 5-1. Pedri González scored the first two goals for his country.

Portugal will play one more friendly match against Ireland on Tuesday before commencing the competition against the Czech Republic in Leipzig on June 18. Turkey and Georgia are also members of Group F, in which Portugal is the top contender.

Portugal’s coach, Roberto Martínez, utilised Gonçalo Ramos to spearhead his offence, ensuring that Cristiano Ronaldo never left the sideline.

After concluding his professional season with Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo joined Portugal on Friday. The 39-year-old is expected to participate in the European Championship for the sixth time, a record. Ronaldo is the all-time highest scorer in men’s football, with 128 goals. In 2016, he assisted Portugal in winning the European title.

In the eighth minute of the match at Portugal’s National Stadium, located near Lisbon, Modric defeated custodian Diogo Costa to score the opening goal. Vitinha fouled Mateo Kovacic in the area, resulting in the 38-year-old Real Madrid midfielder being sent to the penalty spot.

Diogo Jota and Nelson Semedo, who were substituted at halftime, teamed up to equalise for the hosts in the 48th minute. Semedo assisted the Liverpool forward in tapping in the ball.

In the 56th minute, Ante Budimir reestablished Croatia’s lead by heading in a deflection of Mario Pašalić’s strike, which Costa had successfully diverted onto the crossbar.

In order to prevent Portugal from suffering a more severe defeat, Costa denied Nikola Vlašić on two separate occasions.

In the 54th minute, Modric was replaced. His contract with Madrid is due to expire at the end of the month, following a season in which he was unable to maintain his starting position in Carlo Ancelotti’s team. But the former Ballon d’Or winner seemed to indicate he wants to continue playing for the Spanish club when he told its fans in the celebrations of Champions League title No. 15 that he would see them “next season.”

The opening match of Euro 2024 will be played on Friday between the host nation, Germany, and Scotland.
