LUIS SUAREZ told the press on Monday, through tears, that this week will be his last game for Uruguay.
The star player who used to play for Liverpool and Barcelona said he will quit international football after Friday’s World Cup test against Paraguay.
Suarez, who is 37 years old, said he would play with the same excitement as his first game, which was in 2007.
“I leave knowing I gave everything for the national team until Friday,” he said. I don’t feel bad.
“There is no better pride in oneself than knowing when the right moment to retire is and luckily I am confident that I am retiring from the national team because I want to take a step aside.”
The striker has been with the Reds since 2011 and said he is glad he is quitting on his own terms and not because he is hurt.
He went on, “I’m 37 years old, and I know it will be hard to make it to the next World Cup.” It makes me feel a lot better that I can quit and not have to wait for my injuries to stop calling me up or retire me.
“Being ready to step back and wanting to do so is very helpful. It’s hard because the choice wasn’t simple.
“But I go with the peace of mind that until the last game I gave my all, and that the flame did not burn out slowly and that is why I made the decision that it should be now.”
The star player from Uruguay has been to four World Cups and was named the best player at the 2011 Copa America.
And Marcelo Bielsa’s team came in third place in the Copa America this year. Suarez said he wanted to finish the job on his country’s home pitch.
He also said, “My dream was for my kids to see me win something important with the national team. That last goal was great for them, even though they didn’t get a trophy to take home.”
