The Almeria team was enraged by three controversial VAR judgments during their match against Real Madrid.
Before Madrid found their rhythm again in the second half and won 3-2, the bottom team in La Liga led 2-0 at the interval and seemed like they may win their first league game of the season.
Almeria claimed on their website that the referee and VAR had “ruined” their day after the game was marred by multiple outrageous calls.
Almeria defender Marc Pubill told DAZN, “I assume that someone determined that we weren’t permitted to win here at Bernabéu today, and that’s what occurred.” I am at a loss for words.
Largie Ramazani and Edgar Gonzalez gave Almeria the lead in the first half. After 57 minutes, Jude Bellingham equalized the score with a superb penalty kick.
Jude Bellingham converted the penalty kick after Joselu headed the ball onto Kaiky Fernandes’ arm.
Vinicius Jr.’s goal to equalize was given after it was first disallowed for handball, which infuriated Almeria.
But the contentious penalty call came about because Real Madrid striker Joselu headed the ball against Kaiky Fernandes’ arm from a few inches above him.
Soon later, Almeria appeared to have increased their lead to two goals once more thanks to Sergio Arribas’ header after a ferocious counterattack.
Dion Lopy was found to have struck Bellingham in the face during the build-up, leading to a three-minute VAR review that invalidated the goal.
Bellingham was taken down by a flailing Lopy arm during their scramble for the ball in Almeria’s half.
Almeria was still up 2-1 after sixty-four minutes, and after playing so effectively in front of goal, they must have felt optimistic about their future.
But to Bernabeu’s pleasure, Real Madrid leveled after 67 minutes by a header from Aurelien Tchouameni’s long cross, thanks to Vinicius Jr.
The referee almost immediately disallowed the goal for handball, but after seeing the play on the monitor, he decided to give the goal credit.
In the hundredth minute, Bellingham changed roles and contributed to Madrid’s devastating, dramatic comeback.
Almeria was enraged by his attempt at a handball, but the referee may have thought it had come off his shoulder instead of his upper arm.
Even a 2-2 draw would have pleased Almeria, who have only managed six points in 21 games this season. However, there was still a horrible twist to the story.
Ten minutes into stoppage time, Carvajal pounced on Bellingham’s header to the far post and flicked it home, much to the chagrin of Almeria and ecstasy of his supporters.
