Just prior to United’s announcement of Leny Yoro’s arrival from Lille for £52 million, the 22-year-old arrived in France last night and has since signed a contract that will extend until 2029. The potential value of the transaction is in excess of £30 million.

The Ligue 1 powers Marseille will pay an initial £27m for the one-cap England forward, in addition to £3.2m in add-ons.

United has also incorporated a 50% sell-on clause into the bundle deal.

The Red Devils have now announced that his departure has been finalized in a concise statement posted on their website.

The statement stated that “Mason Greenwood has officially transferred from Manchester United to the French club Olympique de Marseille on a permanent basis.”

“The 22-year-old English forward, who spent the previous season on loan at Getafe in Spain, has made 129 appearances and scored 35 goals for United since his debut in 2019.”

“We extend our best wishes to Mason for his future endeavors.”

Greenwood, who Marseille disclosed will don No.10 in his official unveiling video, enrolled in United’s development academy in Halifax, West Yorkshire, at the age of six.

He advanced through the ranks and made his senior début in 2019, subsequently becoming a regular member of the first team.

However, Greenwood was suspended by the club in January 2022 and was subsequently charged with attempted rape, assault, and controlling and coercive behavior toward a woman nine months later.

He refuted the allegations, and all criminal proceedings were ultimately dismissed in February 2023.

Last season, Greenwood was loaned to the Spanish club Getafe, where he demonstrated his exceptional skills and was awarded the Player of the Year award.

Numerous organizations throughout Europe pursued his services as a result of his performances.

In a meeting with the club’s leadership team this month, Greenwood was informed that he no longer had a future at Man Utd. Subsequently, he trained independently during pre-season.

Marseille promptly executed their agreement, despite the opposition of numerous supporters who initiated a campaign known as #GreenwoodNotWelcome.

The Marseille mayor, Benoit Payan, has also publicly expressed his opposition to the initiative and has stated that he will attempt to persuade the club’s president, Pablo Longoria, to cancel it.

However, De Zerbi, who had relocated from Brighton, declared his intention to “protect Greenwood” upon his arrival.

De Zerbi previously stated, “There is not much to say about Greenwood because he has not yet been recruited.”

“He is an international-level player and a champion.”

“I am not paying attention to personal matters; I am unaware of what transpired.”

“When a player signs with the club, I regard him as my child.”

“I will defend him publicly, even if I am able to remove his ear in private.” My players are comparable to my offspring.

In the interim, Greenwood will not have to wait for an extended period of time to return to his birthplace and England.

Greenwood, who was born in Bradford, may represent Marseille in a friendly match against Sunderland at Valley Parade, the home of League Two club Bradford City, on August 3.
