Cody Gakpo scored his third goal of Euro 2024 and set up another one as the Netherlands beat Romania 3-0 to move on to the quarterfinals.
Both players almost scored again in the second half, but a Van Dijk header hit the post and a Gakpo shot from close range was called offside.
Seven minutes from the end, the Netherlands finally doubled their lead when Gakpo kept the ball in play while dribbling to the byline and cut a pass back for Donyell Malen to score.
In the last minute of the game, Malen scored his second goal for Ronald Koeman’s team, while Reds defender Ryan Gravenberch stayed on the bench.
The Netherlands’ next game is against Turkey in the round of 16 at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. The game starts at 8pm BST on Saturday, July 6.
“I think we played well and took a great step forward after our last game, which we lost 3-2 to Austria in the group stage,” Gakpo said after the game.
“I’m really happy.” We had to do something after the last game, and today was a good step in the right way.
“The anger, intensity, and defending as a team were things we talked about a lot.” I’m glad we won because it was a good step.
