Following Sunday’s dismal 0-0 stalemate between Man United and Liverpool at Anfield, Virgil van Dijk had some harsh words to say about Man United goalkeeper Andre Onana.
Liverpool had 34 shots, 16 more than they had in their 7-0 victory in this matchup the previous season, but they were unable to penetrate Erik ten Hag’s resolute defense.
The home crowd was furious with Onana for what they saw as time-wasting during the Premier League match, as he took his time over each goal kick.
When Van Dijk spoke to Onana in the tunnel following the game, it was evident that he shared the sentiments of his team’s supporters.
The Dutchman reportedly told Onana, “We only played a half-hour game because of you,” according to talkSPORT’s Alex Crook.
Crook said, “Onana just smiled in response.”
During his post-match interview, Van Dijk appeared visibly irritated as he accused United of setting up a boring draw.
He declared, “There was only one team trying to win the game.” It is irritating because, of course, we want to win every game.
We occasionally shot too easily and had the opportunity to pass on the overlap. Sometimes the right choice was not made.
Naturally, we continue, but it annoys me because we were better in every way. Ultimately, they have a point that excites them, and we have a point that disappoints us.
They are obviously not at their best. You are cautious of our threat when you come here. We ought to have prevailed today. Certain conditions require us to learn, and I have no doubt that we will.
