Will Fish, a teenage defender for Manchester United, is expected to have sustained a major injury during their 3-0 loss to Liverpool on Saturday. This injury could keep him out of the game for a long time.
Fish ended up worse off despite the 21-year-old center defender receiving a yellow card for a careless tackle on Harvey Blair of Liverpool. He stayed on the ground after the challenge, holding his face, as the United medical staff raced to his help and made a hasty request for a stretcher.
Fish was helped off the pitch and into the tunnel with his right leg strapped into a brace. Erik ten Hag, the manager of United, spent some time to comfort the young player before he departed the field. Fish, who was upset—especially because the new season was approaching—talked with Ten Hag.
Despite spending his entire senior career at United, Fish has only made one appearance for the first team. In the penultimate Premier League game of 2021–2022, he made his debut by substituting in a 2-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers.
United has suffered defeats to Rosenberg, Arsenal, and now Liverpool throughout the preseason. Before Fish’s tragic occurrence on Saturday, they had already lost two important players to injuries despite victory against the Rangers and Real Betis.
Leny Yoro, a recent addition, and Rasmus Hojlund both suffered critical injuries in the crushing defeat to Arsenal. Hojlund is expected to be out for six weeks, and Yoro might not return until October, which would mean he would miss the start of the new season.
Yoro has recently signed a £52 million contract with United after reaching an agreement with Lille, a French club, for the 18-year-old. Yoro might miss nine Premier League games as well as the start of United’s Carabao Cup and Europa League runs if his diagnosis turns out to be accurate.
Now that the preseason is over, United’s next game is set for August 10 at Wembley Stadium in the FA Community Shield versus Manchester City. Ten Hag would have preferred a more positive showing from United before their matchup with their bitter rivals, but he must now look past this Saturday’s game.
Within ten minutes, Liverpool took the lead thanks to a deft move by Fabio Carvalho to outmaneuver Casemiro in the penalty area. Just before halftime, Curtis Jones doubled Liverpool’s lead. In the second half, Kostas Tsimikas added a third goal to ensure a convincing victory for Arne Slot, the new head coach.
On Wednesday, Liverpool defeated Arsenal as well; Carvalho scored the game-winning goal after Mohamed Salah set up the first one. Arsenal’s Kai Havertz scored once, but Liverpool’s lead held firm.
