Alejandro Garnacho thought he had put Manchester United ahead when he scored a 2-1 win over Brighton after a smooth pass from a Red Devils player.
However, Joshua Zirkzee was in the wrong place at the wrong time to block the shot’s path and make one of the craziest offside calls ever seen in the Premier League.
Erik ten Hag’s team broke quickly when Bruno Fernandes passed the ball to Amad Diallo, who scored United’s first goal. Diallo then ran up the pitch and passed the ball back to his captain.
Then Fernandes whips a ball across the box. Joshua Zirkzee doesn’t get it, but Garnacho does, and he sends it flying towards the goal.
The ball goes into the goal, but VAR says it wasn’t a goal, which makes the Manchester United players and fans very upset.
Watching the play again showed that the ball hits Zirkzee and goes into the back of the net before Garnacho’s shot on goal.
What was important was whether or not the Dutchman touched it before it crossed the line.
After watching the play again in slow motion, it was clear that Zirkzee’s knee was just barely offside, so VAR called him offside.
On their Match Centre “X” account, the Premier League explained the ruling, saying that Zirkzee’s goal was given on the pitch.
“The VAR looked at the play to see if Zirkzee was offside and said that the goal should be thrown out.” The game began again with a free kick from Brighton.
Joao Pedro scored the game-winning goal for Brighton in the fifth minute of extra time, making things even worse for Erik ten Hag’s team.
