When Conor Bradley slammed into Kylian Mbappe with a great challenge on Wednesday night, the whole stadium went crazy.
Bradley started at right back in the tough Champions League matchup. Liverpool dominated the defending champions and won 2-0 to keep their perfect start to the tournament going.
Trent Alexander-Arnold, the Reds’ regular right back, couldn’t play against the home team because he hurt his leg and missed England’s game against Southampton on Sunday. He was on the bench for the home team.
He stayed there, though, so the 26-year-old didn’t get to play against the team that wants to sign him and that many people think he’ll join next season as his deal runs out.
Bradley, on the other hand, made sure he wasn’t forgotten by playing great defense at Anfield and easily stopping both Mbappe and Jude Bellingham.
And there was a moment in the first half of the game that caught everyone’s attention: the Northern Irishman went up to the former World Cup winner and beat him to the ball with a clean, hard hit.
With the Liverpool defense out of shape and players not in the right place, Mbappe was in charge of a Madrid counterattack after getting the ball on the left.
Alexis Mac Allister, who scored the first goal for Liverpool, was in a foot race with Mbappe. He was going to almost definitely lose because Mbappe was trying to make a statement after a rough start.
As Andrew Robertson came back, Bradley was forced to cover in the middle, and players like Ibrahima Konate and Ryan Gravenberch worked hard to get back as well.
And Bradley may have known that Mac Allister was losing, because he ran across the field and slid into Mbappe, sending him flying into the penalty area.
However, the ball was won fairly; replays show that the 21-year-old’s right foot definitely won it as Mbappe tried to cut inside him.
Bradley also got up to get the ball back and keep the game going. Mbappe looked annoyed as he chased Bradley to get the ball back.
People inside Anfield cheered loudly when they saw the young player beat one of the best players in the world. Ally McCoist told TNT Sports, “I think the rest of Anfield, like myself, got a little bit of a scare when they saw Mbappe running away initially.”
Fans also praised Bradley on social media. If Alexander-Arnold does leave the club next season, Bradley may play a lot more.
“Conor Bradley, take a bow,” one fan wrote on X, which used to be Twitter. “What an amazing tackle on Mbappe!”
Someone else wrote, “That tackle from Conor Bradley made me stand up and cheer.”
A third person said, “That Bradley tackle on Mbappe is one of the best Anfield tackles since Gerrard played.”
His deal with Liverpool ends in the summer, and Alexander-Arnold has been there since he was a child. He has about five weeks to sign a pre-contract deal with another team.
Many people think he will move to Real Madrid, but it looks like he will either stay at Liverpool or join the European winners.
Bradley, who signed a new long-term deal with the Reds a year ago, got hurt in the second half and was replaced by Joe Gomez.
After the game, Reds manager Arne Slot told everyone what was going on. When asked if he knew how bad the damage was, both for him and Konate, the Dutchman said, “No.” Not yet. I know where the pain is, but it’s hard to say for sure after the game.
“This is what the season is like.” This does happen. It would be great if they could both play on Sunday, but if not, someone else will have to step up. This season, everyone has done that.
