Karol Swiderski gave the visitors the lead on minute 57, but Messi, 37, tied the score ten minutes later.

The 12th minute of additional time saw the hosts come dangerously close to stealing a late victory.

The former Barcelona teammate Jordi Alba headed the ball across to another legendary player for the Blaugranas, Luis Suarez, after the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner lofted it towards him.

Suarez volleyed the ball over the bar, though, missing the close-range goal.

The striker then collided with Charlotte custodian Kristijan Kahlina and rolled on the ground in pain.

At the end of the game, Messi was furious and insisted that the Liverpool icon ought to have been given a penalty.

After the final whistle, the camera captured the star forward criticising the official.

In Spain, Messi reportedly said to the referee, according to Mundo Deportivo, “You’re a mean-spirited son of a b****!”

Remarkably, the referee only gave the Argentina captain a yellow card rather than a red one.

Earlier in the game, Kerwin Vargas beat Miami goalie Drake Callender from close range, but the goal was disallowed for offside for Charlotte.
