Following Fulham’s victory at Old Trafford, Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes angrily confronted the referee.
Following Manchester United’s 2-1 home loss to Fulham on Saturday, Bruno Fernandes, the captain of the team, got into a furious argument with referee Michael Oliver. Calvin Bassey and Alex Iwobi both scored goals to secure the Whites’ first victory at Old Trafford since 2003.
Fernandes, clearly incensed with the way the game was played, rushed over to the match official and complained to Oliver. Boss Erik ten Hag joined him because they were dissatisfied with the refereeing that was being done. After a haphazard performance without Rasmus Hojlund leading the Red Devils’ assault, United fell behind after 65 minutes thanks to a goal from Bassey.
However, Harry Maguire’s close-range tap-in goal late in the game gave the hosts hope that they had saved a point after Bernd Leno had diverted Fernandes’ attempt into his path. With just a yellow card for a harsh foul on Sasa Lukic in the first half, Maguire was perhaps lucky to be on the pitch at all. However, a goal from substitute Adama Traore in the 97th minute gave the visitors the lead again. Traore went past Maguire and set up Iwobi, leaving Andre Onana unable to stop an exciting late winner.
While Maguire, Fernandes’ teammate, blamed their own indifference for Fulham’s late-game breakaway goal and second goal, Maguire seemed to think that the officiating contributed to United’s loss.
“After falling behind by a goal, I felt our response was outstanding, particularly in the final thirty minutes, and once we tied the score, I think there was only going to be one winner,” he remarked. By pushing too many people forward and losing the counterattack, we were ultimately naïve.
“We didn’t do enough in the first sixty minutes or so on the balance of play; we didn’t start the game very well.”
