On social media, Toni Kroos, a German midfielder, revealed that he will play for his country again before the European Championships this summer.
The 34-year-old last played for his country in the last 16 of Euro 2020, when they lost to England 2-0.
After Real Madrid’s loss at Wembley, the star player said he was retiring. But it looks like he has changed his mind since he announced his return on Instagram.
Julian Nagelsmann, the manager of Germany, had said before that he was open to Kroos coming back to the national team, and it looks like the idea of playing in the Euro 2024 tournament at home interested him.
According to Kroos’s Instagram post, he will be playing for Germany again starting in March.
Kroos asked, “Why?” Because the boss of the national team asked me to, I want to, and I’m sure that the team can do more at the Euro than most people think right now.
Before he said he was retiring, the playmaker wore the Germany shirt 106 times.
He was a key member of the team that won the 2014 World Cup. He scored twice in their famous 7-1 win over Brazil in the semi-finals.
Nagelsmann, who became Germany’s coach in September 2023, showed his respect for the team’s hero back in December.
Tony is a great person who is very clear about what he thinks. He is also a very good football player. “Nothing is off limits,” he told her.
Additionally, Nagelsmann said that they had “not concretely” talked about Kroos coming back, but it looks like whatever they said worked.
There will be games in 10 towns in Germany during Euro 2024. The first game is on June 14, and the last one is in Berlin on July 14.
Although Germany will be looking to be in that final, they haven’t had a good run in recent international games. Their World Cup runs ended in the group stage in both 2018 and 2022.
Kroos’s first games with the team after the break will be during the March international break when they play France and the Netherlands.
