Three contentious VAR rulings against Almeria during their match against Real Madrid infuriated the team.
The bottom team in La Liga was ahead 2-0 at the break and appeared to be headed for their first league victory of the year until Madrid rediscovered their rhythm in the second half and prevailed 3-2.
The referee and VAR were accused by Almeria on their website of having ‘ruined’ their day after the match was plagued by several egregious decisions.
‘I assume that someone determined that we weren’t permitted to win here at Bernabéu today, and that’s what occurred,’ Almeria defender Marc Pubill said to DAZN. I have nothing further to say.
Largie Ramazani and Edgar Gonzalez gave Almeria the lead in the first half, with Jude Bellingham scoring a spectacular penalty kick to equalize the score after 57 minutes.
Joselu headed the ball onto Kaiky Fernandes’ arm and Jude Bellingham scored the penalty
Almeria were aggrieved when Vinicius Jr’s goal to equalise was given after initially being ruled out for handball
However, Joselu, a striker for Real Madrid, headed the ball against Kaiky Fernandes’ arm from a few inches above him, leading to the controversial penalty call.
Shortly after, Sergio Arribas’s header from a fierce counterattack gave Almeria the impression that they had extended their lead to two goals once more.
However, a three-minute VAR review disqualified the goal, finding that Dion Lopy had struck Bellingham in the face during the build-up.
As they battled for the ball in Almeria’s half, a flailing Lopy arm did manage to catch Bellingham, and Bellingham went down.
After 64 minutes, Almeria was still up 2-1 and must have been confident about their prospects after playing so well in front of goal.
But after 67 minutes, Vinicius Jr.’s header from Aurelien Tchouameni’s deep cross put Real Madrid level, much to Bernabeu’s delight.
The goal was nearly instantly disallowed for handball by the referee, but after reviewing the play on the monitor, he changed his mind and gave the goal credit.
Bellingham turned provider in the 100th minute to help Madrid to a dramatic, cruel comeback
He looked to commit a handball, which infuriated Almeria, but the referee must have judged it had come off his shoulder rather than upper arm.
Almeria, who have only collected six points in 21 games this season, would have been proud of even a 2-2 draw, but there was one more, terrible twist to the tale.
To the delight of his supporters and the dismay of Almeria, Carvajal pounced on Bellingham’s header to the far post ten minutes into stoppage time and flicked it home.
